Product Description
Electronic Arts guarantees a happy Halloween for survival horror fans with the release of this terrifying, deeply personal thriller. Developed as a single-player game, Dead Space delivers the chilling, claustrophobic feeling of being isolated in a dark environment -- all the while being stalked by some truly horrific enemies! Set in the far future, Earth's appetite for natural resources has become a major motivator for deep space exploration. Immense, privately-owned and operated mining ships called "planetcrackers" orbit planets and use sophisticated equipment to carve out entire city-sized chunks of rock, reducing them to component elements and raw ore. When communications go dead on-board the USG Ishimura, a famous planetcracker -- systems engineer Isaac Clarke -- is sent in to fix the problem. Once on-board the vessel, Isaac discovers that the crew has unearthed an ancient and malevolent alien presence far beneath the planet's surface and brought it on-board. Weaponless, alone and terrified, this lone engineer is burdened with much more than simple survival -- he must seal the alien horror back into the dark rock. - Experience the rush of this terrifying, deeply personal thriller game
- Investigate lost signal and repair all necessary equipment in order to restore communications
- Explore distant future onboard the USG Ishimura
- Simulates claustrophobic feeling of being isolated in dark environment
- Developed as a single-player game

| Customer Reviews: Great game spoilt by poor controls / camera angle. August 12, 2010 David Winters (England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
All the other positive reviews sum up what's right about this game. Graphics, sound and atmosphere are all spot on.
Two things that saved it from being a 4-5 star review for me are as follows:
1. It's extremely difficult / frustrating in places. In an age where most games are too easy this should be a plus point but... to have a game this diffficult with very sparse ammo results in lots of occasions where levels become impossible unless you go back to an old save point and start from there, conserve ammo and re start the area.
2. The interface for changing weapons, using items is clunky. Sometimes you die in the game just trying to change weapon or select an oxygen pack. I imagine on a PC there were hot keys for certain items but on the PS3, the only hot keys are for health - (press square) and quick select of weapons (directional buttons). To get other items you have to go into the inventory, select the item and click use. The game doesn't pause while you do this so often you can be killed by an enemy just trying to choose an item to use.
3. The third person camera angle never quite works. The whole time you feel like you're looking at the character's back rather than engaging with what's in front of him. Also when you pull up the inventory, sometimes the camera angle is off so you can't see it - this means you have to waste valuable time tilting until you can see the items (see above point).
Overall not a bad game but not one I'll be re playing, too frustrating by far.
Brill August 11, 2010 Steve Loved this game.
I have always been a fan of survival horror as well as other games and this game did very well. It's not perfect but I've yet to find a game that is.
I am writing this as things come to mind so forgive me if it's a bit disjointed.
It is genuinely spooky - Very atmospheric and if you want to get the most out of it - You'll have to have the lights off, and volume up (preferrably with a decent surround sound or headphones!)
As with many games - The fear and tension is instantly lost as soon as you realise that when you die there is no real penalty - I don't really know what can be done about this but It did change the way I played the game - particularly as I neared the end and definately on my 2nd play through.
At first I would cautiously enter each area and scan for enemies, keep an eye on my health and know the exits and look for where something might jump out.
- but towards the end of the game I would run in & go nuts - knowing that if I died, it would re load the checkpoint and I could try again - and obviously, the 2nd time you know what to expect!
But as I said - This is something which exists in many games and I don't really see a way round this.
The story is quite entertaining in Dead Space and I must admit I admired the way that it subtly mocked scientology! :P
The characters are ok, voice acting is fine but there is little interaction with any other people other than filling in story & objectives between missions.
The weapons on offer are not great - To be honest you'll use the basic weapon for the most part of the game and occasionally swap out to one (maybe two) more when you fight a specific enemy type - but usually because you've run out of ammo.
I really liked that there was no hud to show ammo and health etc.. instead this is incorporated into the character's space suit/armour. other reviewers have said more about this - but I will say that I think it works very well.
The game is only worth playing on hard mode as otherwise it is far too easy.
enemies are not very varied - apart from the bosses, you'll have encountered everythign you're going to by half way through.
With dead space 2 coming out early 2011, if you are interested and haven't played this then you've really got no excuses as it is very cheap to buy now. (I got mine for £13 preowned a couple of months back.)
Dead Space, Dead good.
Looking forward to the sequel.
:)
Unbelievable July 21, 2010 josh91bc As soon as I finished this it became one of my favourite games. It is terrifying, original and addictive to play - how many games pull that off? To top it off, the graphics are incredible, the sounds are perfect and the story is excellent.
You shouldn't even question whether or not to buy this game - just get it.
Just don`t play it alone July 17, 2010 TT Bought this game 2-3 days ago and still haven`t put it down, was playing uncharted 2 before I got Dead Space and wanted to play Uncharted 2 to the end then would start on Dead Space, but after having a sneeky peek at Dead Space and saying to myself that I would just play it a little bit longer, then play Uncharted 2, well will just say that Dead Space is still in the Ps3, WHAT a game, the sound affects and the screaming in the back ground makes your heart beat a little bit faster than normal but also makes you check the whole room as quickly as possible, the game is amazing and being a parent with two young children I will only get to play this when they are in bed, and then I will have to play it in the dark, which is not what I want, just buy and try this game.....you will love it. Glad I Bought this and so far all the games I have bought, I have bought after reading all your reviews on Amazon, which has helped me with games to buy. It is horrible buying games and then not liking them and just letting them gather dust, well you cannot go wrong with this game, just make sure you get the right copy of it an import version may only be in French/German......Play this game in the dark and sound up loud and alone.....WHOEVER YOU ARE YOU WILL BE SCARED.....................
Atmosphere, gameplay and story in perfect balance June 23, 2010 Oliver J. P. Ossowski (UK) Excellent in every way, if you like survival games, puzzle games or shooters then this is for you.
