A simulation approach for the storied franchise results in an entry that can be enjoyable for those the genre has left behind, though there is still something here for the experts.

Product Description
Need for Speed SHIFT is an all-new simulation racing IP that combines the true drivers experience with real-world physics, pixel-perfect car models, and a wide range of authentic race tracks. Need for Speed SHIFT takes players in a different direction to create a simulation experience that replicates the true feeling of driving high-end performance cars. Players are thrust into the loud, visceral, intense, athletic experience of racing a car on the edge of control from the drivers perspective through the combination of perception based G-forces, the hyper reality of the cockpit view, and the brutal experience of a first person crash dynamic. Need for Speed SHIFT features an accurate, accessible physics-based driving model that allows you to feel every impact, every change of track surface and every last bit of grip as you push yourself to the edge. Need for Speed SHIFT is being developed by Slightly Mad Studios in collaboration with Black Box and senior vice president Patrick Soderlund at EA Games Europe. Slightly Mad Studios includes developers and designers that worked on the critically acclaimed games GT Legends and GTR 2. - True Driver's Experience A variety of visual cues delivers the true driver's experience including a three-dimensional HUD that mimics driver head movement, inertia and G-forces. The depth of field also adjusts based on the speed of the car
- So when the car is travelling at high speeds the perspective will shift to the distance putting the car/cockpit out of focus
- Enhanced AI A sophisticated AI system will mean that your races are more exciting than ever before. AI opponents will react and perform based on the player's aggression and overall driving skill thus creating race experiences for all skill sets
- Dynamic Crash Effect - When the player hits a static object or opponent car, the player will feel like they are

| Customer Reviews: Great Arcade Racing Game. July 10, 2010 Remy This NFS Shift was a great buy. The racing is a little bit realistic and a little bit Arcade style so that you can play it once in a while and don't have to be attached to the PS3 for hours.
If you want a polished product, or a driving simulation, look elsewhere July 5, 2010 AK (London) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Let me first describe my entry - I did not grow up playing NFS, nor was i looking for an arcade. I just wanted to have something to spend time with between having finished all one can do in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - Platinum Edition (PS3) and the appearance of Gran Turismo 5 (PS3).
Judged solely on that basis the game is a 2 star at best (as a stretch). It is, in spite of all the hype still much more firmly in the arcade than driving simulator camp in the sense that the driving behaviour is very far from being representative for the cars provided. Transitioning from Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - Platinum Edition (PS3) this is painfully obvious. Having had the privilege of driving several of the (too few) cars available in the game - some on the same tracks available in the game, I can attest that their representation in NFS Shift is at best remotely approximate - i.e. a Mitsubishi Evo has a sharp turn in and is throttle sensitive in its poise. There is none of the precision or obsession with correct car behaviour or feedback that is so evident in the Grand Turismo franchise. The noise - another aspect so widely praised is of the loud and proud variety but does not really accurately represent how the cars sound (again based on own real life experience).
There are further annoyances, such as the unnecessary chatter of your race engineer (I assume), and the rewards for crashing into others (and hence the willingness of the AI to crash into you) - something that should be penalized, rather than rewarded with points.
The game crashes mentioned by some other reviewers seem still not to have been ironed out, either - they were not frequent in my case but annoying nevertheless and with the glacial loading speed of the game overall (also for each new driving challenge) they are even more cringeworthy than they would be, if the game loaded at a more reasonable speed.
If you are looking for an arcade though, some of the annoyances will be less significant - the proneness to crashing and the unrealistic driving dynamics might be seen as a feature, not a bug, the nice detailing of the interior and the mission about progressing through some fictitious championship likewise. Sure the graphics cannot touch Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - Platinum Edition (PS3) and do not demonstrate what is possible in PS3 but they will not make you run away on their own and there is some damage (visual or real, depending on settings). You can even have the car steer and brake for you and the opponents can be set to learner driver skill. So some quick fun can be had - i.e. you do not need to work hard for success at the start like with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - Platinum Edition (PS3) (but then even if you succeed here the reward is a bit hollow, compared to GT5).
If you are waiting for the full Gran Turismo 5 (PS3), this is unlikely to satisfy as an inbetween, on the other hand, as an arcade it borderline works.
NFS Shifts up a gear June 12, 2010 W. Hood 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wow, this wasnt expected. After years of being a chav simulator and then not sure which direction to take with games like Carbon, Undercover and the god-awful Pro Street, NFS has tried it's luck as a more serious racer and it works!
First thing you'll notice are the stunning graphics, sharper than GRID but not as sterile as GT Prologue, tracks and cars (especially interiors - cockpit view is the best way to experience the game) are well modelled and things run smoothly even with a full grid of cars.
Second you'll notice are the special effects, whether it's the great sense of speed - the track becomes sharper as the rest of the screen blurs at high speed, so you 'focus' on the racing line. Hit a bump or gravel trap too hard and the screen shakes violently, hit an opponent or wall and the screen may even blur or black out depending on the impact. It's jarring at first, but it's really well done and makes you think about your race more (rather than trying to bounce off the barriers (a la GT)
Handling is spot on and can be subtly shifted between full-on stuck-to-the-track arcade to a more sim-like option. A quick note, a few people here have noted that the faster cans bounce around a lot - well they do, but if you take a real life Zonda F to Laguna Seca and try and take every bend at 180mph then i'm sure that will bounce around too, you will need to use the brakes on this game!
AI is excellent, other drivers actually overtake each other, try and hold their position, make mistakes, cut curbs and if you're lapping them, they will move over off the racing line - something i havent seen in any other racer yet, even F1 where it's a rule!
Special note to the sound, it's also excellent (and very loud!) and adds thoroughly to experience.
Career mode is huge and constantly rewards your driving (quick tip for anyone starting the game - do time trials of all the tracks to boost your profile and bank balance before hitting the main races)
Why only 4* then? Well the drift racing is rubbish, a staple of all other NFS games has gone super twitchy, while not un-playable it isnt very enjoyable (certainly not as good as the same modes in GRID) you'll find yourself very frustrated and restarting a lot of the events, luckily they can be skipped.
Overall the best looking, best sounding and best handling of any racing game currently on PS3, GT5 may have 1000 cars but will it be this much fun?
PS hopefully Criterion will take the new game into Test Drive Unlimited territory!
It's not as good as NFS Underground... June 2, 2010 NW (London, United Kingdom) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have to say I'm a little bit disappointed with the game. The car in this game is way harder to control than the previous one i.e. NFS Underground, hence I have given up with the game after the first stage. Hope the next one will be improved.
Need for speed shift May 28, 2010 Rodman91 (England UK) Delivered in quicktime and very happy with the game . First time I played this I thought I'd picked a bad one as I won the first race I entered without even trying - but then I turned all the driver aids off - switched to manual gear shift ( playing with a logitech steering wheel )and I have to say this is one of the best racing games out there - if Grand Turismo 5 is even better to play and look at then we are all going to be blown away. The incar graphics on this game are the best I've ever seen , the engine sounds are pretty good and you have to keep an eye on your mirrors cos the other drivers can be very aggressive . If you just want to blast through the whole game and move on to the next one then you can cos you win big sums of money quick so you could just buy all the best cars and breeze through the game . Very happy with this game and for the money - well its a no brainer , I think this is a keeper for me - enjoy !
