Product Description

As the all-new racing experience from Codemasters Studios, creators of Colin McRae: DiRT, Race Driver: GRID is all about the race. Every moment from the adrenalin rush at the start lights to the elation at the chequered flag the tension, pressure, noise, and action.

Featuring only the most powerful race cars current and classic, circuit and drift players will compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships and then go beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, through to road events and urban street races.

With races crammed with action and incident, high-impact moments will come at you thick and fast, one right after another: engine blows, tyre blow outs, tight overtaking, accidents, opponent cars flipping, spinning, collisions with other cars and trackside objects.

From humble beginnings, earning a few thousand dollars a season, build a feared and respected racing team with a multi-million dollar income and complete at dramatic race locations and dominate a multi-disciplined world of racing.

In Europe, race prestige Marques, including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pagani, on the greatest official race circuits. Enter street competitions and race high-performance V8 muscle cars through iconic U.S. cities including San Francisco, Washington DC and Detroit. In the Far East, Japanese racing culture sets the tone where night races, including Drift racing, take drivers through neon illuminated cities and to outlying mountain roads.

As the antithesis of the box-ticking, plodding single-player race game, Race Driver: GRID delivers a diverse career mode in a persistent world of racing that provides each player with a unique experience as their team writes itself into racing folklore.

3 out of 5 stars A good racer - but lack of basic features prevent 4 or 5 stars.   March 31, 2010

I gave this game a go after struggling to find a decent realistic racer on the PS3. This one sounded like it was the nearest thing. Reading the manual the game sounds very promising, online play, test drive cars and race round any track posting your fastest lap times and compare against the world records, download the world record ghost laps, etc.

First up and this is a basic bit of knowledge you need to know about this game, if you want to use the X button for Accelerate and the Square button for Brake like I've been used to on console racers then forget it. Using X to Accelerate makes the cars almost uncontrollable because there is no gradual level of acceleration, it's full acceleration or nothing if you tap X, which is where I suspect those who don't like the handling in this game are going wrong. You simply keep skidding all over the place , especially with the more powerful cars which oversteer.

The game has obviously been programmed to make use of the analogue trigger buttons so you can apply variable levels of acceleration or brake. You don't even get the half press acceleration with the X button like there was on GT4 on the PS2. You simply have to use the default control set up to even play this game. I'm surprised no one else seems to have mentioned this - please note I turn all driver aids off when I play driving games. The handling is pretty sharp and there is no sensitivity control.

It took a bit of getting used to because I've always used X and Square for Accelerate and Brake and then the shoulder buttons for changing gear. Once you've mastered the controls you can start playing. The simple Main Menu gives you the option of an immediate race or Grid World where you can start your career as a race driver. To my surprise there is no Practise option where you can simply choose a car and track to get a feel for the game. Which ever mode you pick you're immediately thrown onto the start grid and the race starts within 3 seconds. You feel a bit lost at first because you've no idea about the track or handling. The lack of a practise mode or a simple Time Trial mode is a poor omission in todays gaming world.

The game certainly whizzes along at a fair pace and the graphics are very impressive. There are several camera angles to choose from which should cater for all tastes, the best being the Bonnet Cam where you view the game as if you're stuck on the front of the windscreen. There are probably around 30 or so different cars of varying style, personally I can do without the Demolition Derby's and the street racing with civilian cars on the road, but I do like the fact that you can't tune the cars up so everyone is playing on a level playing field.

The sound is reasonable but the engine sound of your own car is not loud enough, in races it gets drowned out by the noise from other cars and the crowd. Unfortunately you can't configure the sound enough to change this. If like me you use manual gears it makes listening to the engine note so you know when to change up difficult at times. When you select the In Car Cam (Helment Cam) the engine noise drops even more making it even more difficult to judge gear changes. Its not a disaster but frustrating as its such a basic thing.

In Grid World you get thrown into races , no practise laps to get to know the circuit don't forget, I also seem to get placed near the tail end of the grid all the time. No qualifying laps to determine grid position, which isn't such a bad thing if you just want a quick race. The racing seasons are incredibly short, I only fit in around 3 or 4 events and then it's season over. Most races are between 2 and 3 laps long depending on the event.

Unfortunately you need to own your own team and buy your own car before you unlock the Test Drive feature, and you can only use cars you've bought. What I want is to be able to look at the world record times , choose the same car and then try and beat it, but you need to buy the cars first, and the world records are always the best cars, so you need to play the game a lot game before you can do this. It would have been far better if the lap records were broken down by individual cars and then tracks so you could use any car to break a lap record, instead the records are broken down by car class.

This game is crying out for a separate Time Trial mode where you can use any car and any track and have a crack at the records without having to go through the whole time consuming unlock everything route. Very frustrating. Another problem is that I'm sure all of the online world records are done using all driver aids on, you shouldn't be able to post a score with the driver aids on, or at least there should be a separate set of records with no driver aids at all. And some of the world records look dubious to say the least, many seconds ahead of anyone else.

I like the fact that the cars get damaged, you can still crash into other cars several times before it becomes a problem so its not exactly super realistic , but I think they've got the damage amount just about right for a computer game , it's a good balance between not being able to go round crashing into everything and not being immediately out of the race at the slightest contact. Overall its an enjoyable racer which could easily be a 4 or 5 stars but the lack of basic features and the feel which leans towards arcadey mean it gets a decent 3 stars from me.

It's a realy good game, but the loadings take forever, I never appreciate car games that you can't drive against a friend.
