Final Fantasy XIII is all about spectacle. It opens with a series of visually stunning set pieces, and generally only gets more impressive as time goes on. Unfortunately, this means the first few hours of the game aren't as coherent as they should be, and a lot of what's going on will only make sense in retrospect. Despite this, it's definitely worth playing through to the end, because the way the characters develop turns it from more than just a bunch of flashy fights and pretty environments. Going into specifics is hard due to fact that most plot details are spoilers, but the whole thing plays out as both a subversion of and an homage to a traditional RPG save-the-world plot, depending on your perspective.
As far as gameplay is concerned, it starts off overly simplistic, and introduces extra elements as time goes on. While this could have been done in about half the time, once you get access to Paradigm shifts the game becomes genuinely tactical. If your paradigms are set up wrong, you die, and if you don't know when to switch, you die. This is especially obvious in the Eidolon boss fights, which play out more like puzzles than traditional RPG bosses. The characters are a varied and interesting bunch, who are all given ample time to grow and change over the course of the game. Every time the game throws a character that looks like a flat one-dimensional cliché, they either gain depth as the story progresses, or the story reveals them to have been far more complicated all along. The game loses a bit of its focus near the end, when it throws you into a wide open environment full of gribbly monsters, and you can easily waste hours on sidequests and avoiding the plot, but once you continue on with the story it explodes into an amazing ending worthy of the name "Final Fantasy" on every level.
Musically it's a bit weak compared to its predecessors, but special mention should go to the vocal arrangement of the chocobo theme, which is great. The English voice acting is top-notch, with every major character doing a good job of getting their character across. Bonus points go to Vanille's Australian/British/American/South African accent which can never decide where it's from, but never fails to sound awesome.
Overall, despite an unsteady beginning that puts many reviewers off, Final Fantasy XIII is an impressive and entertaining journey that's definitely worth the time and money you put into it.

Well, after 58 hours of gameplay and finally defeating the big boss at the end, I feel I can venture an opinion on this game. Beware, there may be spoilers if you haven't played yet.
First of all, as ever, the whole thing looks absolutely glorious. Graphics are beautifully rendered and the cutscenes are gorgeous to watch.
The battle system is simple and easy to use.
Character development is also easy to use, although it lacks the flexibility of previous systems - it is not sensible to develop characters equally in various different skills at the same time, you really need to pick one or maybe two character types and stick with them in order to get the best out of the system.
Now to the bad stuff:
Compared to previous Final Fantasy games, the gameplay is VERY linear. There really is no option through most of the game but to follow the storyline without deviation. Sidequests don't really open up until after chapter 9, and even then, the world is very limited. There are basically two outdoor areas where you can run around and kill stuff that is essentially minding its own business, but there are no towns, shops or people to talk to. It certainly doesn't have the depth or freedom that you got in FFVIII or FFX (or even FFX-2).
The characters, while reasonably engaging, don't seem to have the depth that the likes of Tidus or Squall have had previously, and some of them are downright annoying - I really felt the desire to slap more than one of them and tell them to man up.
Some of the battles, even by FF standards, are so ridiculously difficult that it's really discouraging. The end boss, in particular, is even more difficult than anything I have ever fought before - it almost brought me to tears, it was so frustrating.
In addition, the eidolon (summon) battles are unbelievably difficult, and it is not possible to skip them. However, it is difficult to use the eidolons, and in many cases pointless. You cannot use them more than once in a battle, and you can only use the one belonging to the lead character. They honestly do not seem to add anything worthwhile to either the plot or the gameplay.
It may well be a feature of PS3 games that I'm not used to yet, but the final level of character expansion doesn't open up until after the final boss has been beaten. Being used to previous FF games, carrying on battling after the story has ended seems at best pointless and at worst time-wasting.
After the final cutscene and end credits had finished, I was left with a distinct feeling of 'well, is that it?' In all the other FF games I've played, the ending has seemed...right, and in the right place in terms of character development. This, by contrast, was distinctly disappointing. Character arcs were too short and shallow, and gameplay was simply not exapnsive enough (I know, after 58 hours...?). In summary, although I enjoyed playing this, I won't be going back for a repeat. Once was enough. I feel this is a real shame, as some of the FF games I have played over and over.

i have recently purchased this collectors edition box set of final fantasy xiii and to my surprise it did not contain the 3 special edition cgi art prints or the decal, nowhere did the product information mention that the set was incomplete else i would not have bought it. i am so upset by this i have not even played the game yet as i was getting it for a collection and buyin a different version to play (so as to keep my special edition in pristine condition). Any sellers i advise to package in a strong cardboard box rather than a padded envelope as my copy got squashed in transit! hopefully my problem will get resolved shortly but my advice to anyone buying this set is to check with the seller before buying that set is complete, else you will end up with the same problem as me!!!

FF X111 is the best looking game ever produced for a gaming console.
The effort Square Enix have put into this game is incredible!
The graphics are second to none.
The gameplay is brilliant.
The combat system works very well and is very challenging,deep and fun!
The main characters have all got very different personalties,they are interesting,loveable, occasionally annoying but most of all close to real life!
Squre Enix have always been one of the best developers around,the high all round quality of their games put some games developers to shame!
I would recomend this game to anyone who appreciates QUALITY GAMING!
