Beautiful, compelling, and unforgiving, Demon's Souls is the hardcore RPG experience PlayStation 3 owners have been waiting for since the platform's launch. Revolutionary online features support your adventure like never before, presenting seamless interconnectivity that serves in every instance to enhance the single-player game. Team up with other players in simultaneous cooperative play, working together to topple some of the game's colossal bosses, or force your way into the games of skilled players and challenge them to PvP battle.

Leave hints and clues for those who will follow in your footsteps; either intentionally or through your own inadvertent demise, your bloodstains will allow your successors to view a replay of your death, hinting at how to avoid your gruesome fate. Unprecedented in its depth and subtlety, peerless in its relentlessly challenging gameplay, Demon's Souls is the ultimate action RPG.

King Allant the XII, the last king of Boletaria, searched tirelessly to expand his might. The Nexus, a great ice shrine nestled in the mountains, bestowed the power of the souls onto him, bringing prosperity to his kingdom. Still unsated, he returned again to the Nexus, where he foolishly awakened the Old One from its eternal slumber. This long forgotten evil, now wrought upon Boletaria, plunged the realm into darkness and fog. A mighty demon horde poured into the kingdom, devouring the souls of men. Champions from other realms learned of Boletaria's fate and sought to deliver the kingdom from evil; none would return from the cursed land. Called upon by a mysterious maiden in black, you go forth, the last hope for humanity in a place lost to demons and darkness...

5 out of 5 stars Great game.   September 6, 2010
JWM (Leeds, UK)
I'm giving this five stars - it's a fantastic game with the nostalgia of games I played in my childhood.

Firstly, there are plenty of reviews that tag this game as 'challenging', if that's not your bag, look elsewhere. This game is not as hard initially as the majority opine, it gets harder with NG+1 etc. but by then you have learnt to be cautious and not jump into melee combat as you would with God of War and the like.

TL:DR If you like the sounds of this game, buy it! If not, don't.

Wow okay this is the best game i think i've played in such a long time it was literally amazing, like many of the other reviews i'm sure have said this but its starts hard and gets HARDER!! you cant pick a difficulty if your wondering, you just have to get good.

Its a lot of slash and hack with everything you can block like there's no tomorrow and when your fighting a boss pray you don't die :P because you'll find yourself hiding behind rubble thinking 'please done find me' :P and i don't exaggerate when i say i was playing this game and my girlfriend is screaming because the boss would make you jump and you really really don't wanna die 'Big adrenaline rush' and so rewarding.

The storyline on this game is very good and original, not full of twists and turns just very enjoyable, and if your gonna buy this game i really really suggest you get the black phantom edition because it comes with a walkthrough which is so so handy, i found myself playing this game with the book in my lap i would have missed so much if it hadn't got this edition and it would have taken a lot longer to grasp certain aspects of the game.

The graphics are excellent too, very diverse amount of scenery it was all amazingly shaded and well thought through.

The enemies too what can i say Awesome..Even the 1 on 1 with a common enemy can become very hard to begin with well and all the way through :P just the ones on lvl 1 are easy when your on lvl3 but the lvl 3 enemies are just as hard as when you first started playing, because lets face it in real life 1 man which is all that you are cant take on a hundred enemies and win on this i would say the playing field is all about using skill and strength as you would in real life i mean this is like you get hit 1 once or twice and your a gonna because in real life no ones gets stabbed more than twice and gets back up to fight.

Dont worry you do get stronger because you can upgrade aspects of yourself to be a better fighter, mage, archer or carry more take more hits ect its just a labour of love because you can find yourself so angry when you die twice and lose all your souls 'which upgrade your self or weapons'.

souls is the currency basically too, die once you can pick them up, you die twice and you lose them and have to build them back up again by slaying enemies, i remember losing 60,000 souls very very frustrating.

The weapons and armour are So cool too :D you'll have to find out for yourself.

right well i feel like i'm ranting overall 10/10 for every aspect of this game, amazing enemies, bosses, scenery and amour weapons and graphics are all really good.

Just be prepared to die. alot.

Everything you could want from a 1 to 1 epic real life fantasy medieval game

5 out of 5 stars Long lasting and challenging   August 23, 2010

As previously mentioned, the game is EXTREMELY tricky to begin with and will cause you to die and continue over again quite relentlessly. This can get pretty irritating due to the loading screens and time spent waiting, however, as you put more hours into it, the controls begin to make more sense (using the shoulder buttons to attack/defend) and you will attune to the way you level up your character and the weapons/equipment and how you are able to respond to these based on your stats. For example, heavy weapons require more strength to use them effectively, heavier armour will weigh you down and make you slower etc. After a while you'll be able to make a character that suits how you want to play and the game gets more rewarding, such as killing enemies that literally tower over you and previously killed you in one hit. It will happen! The graphics are prety solid and when you're trying not to die, the game certainly throws some jumps at you. There's a lot to unlock and anyone gunning for trophies will find plenty to work for in this game that'll keep you coming back to play. As you progress you also unlock the full potential of the seamless online mode such as encountering other players trying to 'invade' and take your life, however, you have the oppertunity to summon other players to aid you and help beat levels. Overall, it provides an online experience that's completely new and is the perfect game for any baulder's gate fan who's waiting for a new hack 'n slash for next gen consoles.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most compelling games of this gen   August 15, 2010

Much has been written about the difficulty of Demon's Souls and, I must admit, it nearly led to me not buying it as i'd imagined it would be far too hard for a fairly casual gamer like myself.

Thankfully I took the plunge anyway, as I just liked the look and feel of all i'd seen and felt it could well be my thing.

I am so glad I did. The game is hard but not impossible. I found that taking something of an "MMO" approach, expecting to die, expecting to grind for levels until you can progress again and treating it like a proper RPG was the key to both enjoying it and progressing in it. As the game went on it was no longer hard but always challenging.

The game itself is an action RPG set in a world in which you must lift a curse by fighting through a series of levels to defeat the bosses you'll find there and collect their souls.

All killing gives you souls and these are your currency in the game, for levelling and for buying items.

Whenever you die you will be turned into soul form and have half of your health and any souls you have are lost. You must fight your way back to regain those souls. Die again and they are lost for good. This certainly forces a slow and careful approach and, for me, increased the atmosphere but giving an even greater sense of dread.

The online elements of this are fantastic. Seeing the ghosts of other players are they progress alongside you, calling the "Blue Phantoms" of other players into help you on a level or the feeling of dispair as a "Black Phantom" player invades your game and kills you just as you're about to open up that next shortcut. It's brilliantly implemented and genuinly adds to the game (unlike the all too often "thrown in because we had to" multi of many games.

All in all a fantastic game. I think this will be an all time classic.
